Θέμα : Επιστολή μας προς : Tibor Braun, Amares Chatt, Andras Schubert

Κυρία Παπαευθυμίου,

     Σας κοινοποιούμε την επιστολή την οποίαν αποστείλαμε στους κυρίους Tibor Braun, Amares Chatt και Andras Schubert και της οποίας θέμα είναι η αντιμετώπιση της μελέτης :

''Επίδραση της εξόρυξης βωξίτη στα ιζήματα του κόλπου της Ιτέας- προσδιορισμός ιχνοστοιχείων και ραδιενεργών νουκλιδίων'', από το Δημοτικό Συμβούλιο του Δήμου Δελφών της 11-11-2011 και ιδιαιτέρως από τον και Δημοτικό Σύμβουλο καθηγητή του Πανεπιστημίου Αιγαίου, κο Λυριντζή Ιωάννη. Η συγκεκριμένη μελέτη έχει συνταχθεί το 2007 από την κα Καραγιαννίδη Θεανώ, με επιβλέπουσα καθηγήτρια εσάς και έχει δημοσιευθεί στο : ''Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry'' Vol. 279 No 3(2009) 923-934.

     Ο κος Λυριντζής αποκάλεσε το δημοσίευμα ''ελλειπές και παραπλανητικό''. Με δεδομένες τις εντυπώσεις απαξίωσης των ευρημάτων της μελέτης, οι οποίες δημιουργήθηκαν στους Δημοτικούς Συμβούλους από τα λεγόμενα του κου Λυριντζή και επιθυμώντας εμείς σαν Σύλλογος να ισχυροποιήσουμε την επιχειρηματολογία μας για το θέμα της ρύπανσης του κόλπου της Ιτέας από την δραστηριότητα των εγκαταστάσεων της εταιρείας S&B, παρακαλούμε για την άποψή σας επί του θέματος. Δηλαδή, εάν τα περιγραφόμενα και τα ευρήματα της μελέτης, δεν είναι ανέλεγκτες εικοτολογίες και ότι χρήζουν, περαιτέρω επιστημονικής ερεύνης.

Dear Sirs,

     During the 11/11/2011 meeting of the Town Council, of the Municipality of Delphi, the Study of Environmental Implications (SEI) for the continuation of operations of Bauxite facilities of S&B Company was discussed. The Interest Groups that do not agree with the SEI produced, presented certain facts to support their position. Included among those facts was a reference to a 2007 study titled “Impact of bauxite mining on the Itea gulf sediments: determination of trace elements and radionuclides” by Theano Karagiannidi, resident of Itea, and overseen by Assistant Professor Heleni Papaefthymiou of the University of Patras. The study has also been published in the “Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry”, Vol 279, No 3 (2009), pp 923-934.

    The reference to this study was made because the bauxite dust that is produced by these facilities that have been operating for decades, are causing an enormous problem to the western side of the city of Itea. Furthermore, from the beginning of the study there is explicit use of the term “contamination” as it pertains to the study findings about radioactive elements U238, Th232 and Ra226.

     At the aforementioned Town Council meeting, Councilman Mr. Liritzis, who is a Professor at the University of the Aegean and specializes in this subject, reviewed the abstract of the study on the spot for a brief moment and after asking for permission to speak on the subject he commented that the study was “incomplete and misleading”. Due to the little time available for this discussion it was not possible to ask questions or clarifications regarding the meaning of Mr. Liritzis’s statements.

Since it was not clear whether these comments reflected potential intra-science disagreements over the methods of measurement, analysis, etc, or if they went to the heart of our concerns . Given that the behavior of Councilmen gave the impression that they considered these findings not worrisome from an unsubstantiated and dubious study, we ask for your position as to whether the use of the term “contamination” in this study pertains to limits that render the findings and conclusions potentially dangerous to Public Health, and require further study.
